Attention energy conscious vehicle owners: have you been wishing and hoping for a way to refuel your car without much hassle, while still remaining environmentally friendly? The Honda FCX Clarity fuel-cell car just might be the answer. Thanks to Honda, energy conscious vehicle owners will be able to refuel their cars by harnessing solar power with the FCX Clarity using Soltec panels developed by Honda. And here’s the best part: FCX Clarity owners will not have to leave their house to refuel their cars…

In early 2010, Honda announced the release of an all new “next generation” solar powered refueling station for their FCX Clarity, and it’s small enough to fit in the car owner’s garage. In fact, that’s just where Honda intended the refueling station to live. Different from other solar refueling stations, this new next generation solar station has no compressor – Honda eliminated the solar station’s compressor which was very bulky and proved to be the most expensive component of the solar station. Alternately, the solar station absorbs energy from the sun during the day and stores it, so FCX Clarity owners can recharge their cars by slow-filling their cars over an eight hour period at night.

To create this compact and efficient solar hydrogen station, Honda has developed Soltec panels – each station houses 48 panels of thin filmed cells to produce six kilowatts of electricity. Los Angeles is the first U.S. city to house this new solar hydrogen station. This station supports California’s effort to create a “Hydrogen Highway”, with numerous stations throughout the state.
